Description

This object is an open cluster located 4000 light years away in the constellation of Auriga at a declination of +44 degrees. Its designations include NGC 1664, Collinder 56, Lund 143, and Melotte 27. Its apparent span to us of 18 arc-minutes corresponds to a width of 20 light years.

The nickname of this object is the Kite Cluster. I despise most DSO nicknames but I am OK with this one. It does somewhat look like a kite with a long tail. It also has been called the 4H cluster, because it resembles the symbol of the 4-H club, but that one is lost on me.
