Description

IC 1396: The Elephant Trunk Nebula. This nebula is in the constellation Cepheus and is roughly 2,400LY away from us. Processed with a HOO palette (emphasizing Hydrogen, which appears as red, and Oxygen, which appears as blue). This is a site of massive star formation and there are a few very big, very hot stars that are ionizing the gas, which causes the nebula to glow brightly.
