Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a low surface brightness (LSB) grand design barred spiral galaxy located 150 million light years away in the constellation of Lynx at a declination of +36 degrees. This magnitude 13.5 object spans 1.7 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 80,000 light years. Our perspective of this galaxy is about halfway between face-on and edge-on.

I wish we were closer to this galaxy – its structure is complex. The barred core is asymmetric, with a strong ansae at the top. Bright blue star forming regions are evident throughout the disk, which is comprised primarily by two strong but distorted arms. Something is disturbing this galaxy – could it be one of the 2 “companions” to the right side?

Distance information is not available for the 2 small galaxies. My best guess is that neither is a true companion. Ar a distance of 150 million light years. these galaxies would only be 15,000 light years in diameter which is too small in my opinion for such defined disk structures.
