Description

Saturn, imaged using an 8 in. SCT telescope. Though Saturn was only 31.5 degrees above the horizon, good seeing and the use of an ADC helped considerably. For this session, I used no Barlow lens and was able to lower my gain setting. This helped reduce noise considerably. Given the small pixel size on this camera, sampling was still satisfactory even at f/10.

A total of 12 videos were acquired, each 90 s in length over a 20 minute period (100 ms exposures.) Images were acquired using a QHY 5iii 178C one shot camera, with gain setting of 8. The final image was obtained by stacking the best 40% of frames from each video. I acquired roughly 8,100 total frames, with about 3,260 included in the final stack. The sub-frames from the 12 videos were de-rotated using WINJUPOS.

Apparent size: 18.4 arcsec

Altitude: 31.5 degrees above the horizon
