Description

M44, The Beehive Cluster, is an open star cluster in the constellation Cancer. It is one of the closest clusters to the solar system. It has been known since antiquity. Galileo was the first to resolve the brightest stars in the cluster. Charles Messier integrated this object in his catalog in 1769. The radius of the M44 core is about 11.4 light years. It contains at least 1000 gravitationally linked stars. The approximate age of this cluster is around 600 million years.
