Description

After having finished the Heart and Soul in SHO with Rokinon 135 mm, I was looking through Stellarium and trying to find another cool widefield shot. I looked at a couple options and decided I really liked the rosette in SHO and curious how it would look with the Christmas Tree Nebula......Whoa was I absolutely blown away by the first 4 min Hydrogen subs!!!! I figured given a night with 3 filters and see what it looked like. Well, O3 only had 10 usable subs, but a second night added enough frames while dodging stray clouds.

I had no idea how much nebulosity existed around the Christmas Tree Nebula and that he Rosette not only had 1 stem, but 2 stems that connected toward the bow of the nebulosity around the the Christmas Tree. Plus, the sulfur data around this area was as good as I had seen. I quickly looked at astrobin to compare similar sized images of the area. Sure enough, there was at least a hydrogen square from the rosette, but nothing with so much nebulosity.  To say I was pumped would be quite the understatement!!!!

With the help of Tim Hutchison with some linear denoise techniques and Uwe Deutermann with help on noise and star reduction I was able to make the image really jump out of the screen at me. So much detail for a 135 mm lens and so much color from all 3 channels all from my backyard!!!!

Definitely my best widefield image, but maybe my favorite 1-3 images I have taken for all time. And all that with 135 mm camera Lens, I can't quite wrap my mind around it. Definitely beyond pleasantly surprised.

Nebula Details:

In the bottom left, the Rosette nebula is a stunning diffuse hydrogen cloud surrounding a open cluster of stars in the middle of the frame that formed from condensing of the hydrogen cloud. Locate in the constellation of Monoceros, the nebula is about 5,000 light years from earth and measures approximately 130 light years in diameter.

Located in the mid right area, The Christmas Tree nebula along with the cone nebula, snow flake cluster, and fox fur are part of the NGC 2264 group. Located approximately 2,600 light years in the constellation of Monoceros. The nebula is predominantly a hydrogen emission type surrounding young open clusters of stars and new born proto-stars.
