Description

This planetary nebula, also known as PK 217+14.1, is located 2300 light years away in the constellation of Canis Minor at a declination of +3 degrees.  It is a magnitude 14 PN which spans 6 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 4 light years.

Although some OIII is present in the central region, the nebula is dominated by HII.  The progenitor star appears to be the small blue-purple star at the center of the nebula.  I would like to make sense of the interesting structure of the brighter nebula clouds, but I have not been successful so far.  It looks more like an emission region than a planetary nebula to me, but I do think it is a PN because of the symmetric OIII signal in the central region. (That OIII signal is really not visible here, where the HII signal takes over completely.  It is only apparent in the OIII master.).

A number of bright colorful foreground Milky Way stars make the framing a bit more interesting.
