Description

This was a quick snapshot with my iPhone on the night of November 8, 2021 when Jupiter, Saturn, the Moon and Venus all got together in the same part of the sky. I wish I'd had time to get the DSLR and tripod out but I was getting my imaging rig going and didn't plan ahead to do this better.

Even so, the iPhone succeeded at the basic task of showing the three planets and the Evil Orb, I mean the Moon all lined up. It also turns out that Pluto was shyly hiding about mid way between Saturn and the Moon though of course it's far too dim to see. If you extend the line up to the left out of the frame, Neptune would have been lurking about the same distance from Jupiter as the invisible Pluto is from Jupiter. Of course, that would also have been invisible to the iPhone.

The blue smudge just above the roofline appears to be an optical artifact. I took several frames and it moves around from frame to frame. Since I was handholding the camera the framing wasn't exactly the same for each shot and the relatively bright moonlight probably caused some sort of flare and/or internal reflection inside the camera.
