Description

I imaged this galaxy last September at f3.3 in my 8" SCT, but was disappointed with the scale and amount of noise. This image is taken at f10, and starts to show some detail in the dust lane that bisects the core of this edge on galaxy, which lies about 28m LY away, and spans 100,000 LY.

I captured just over two hours data (120s subs) but ended up throwing half of this away, due to tracking and other problems. On a mediocre night, swathes of cloud interfered with my guiding and capture, and I was lucky to get much data at all.

Frames were captured in Envisage with automatic dark subtraction, pre-processed in Nebulosity using a master flat, before aligning and stacking in Penumbra. The resulting data were then processed in Startools v1.6 using a standard workflow, followed by gentle lightening to brighten the image for publication.

It is still a bit noisy, and could be sharper, but given the conditions, I'm just pleased to have got started in 2021.

Description: This version was processed in Startools v1.7, and as well as a standard workflow, I have isolated the galaxy, using the 'super structure' module and applied some dimming to the stars. Perhaps not quite as much detail in the dust lane, but it certainly makes it stand out more.
