Description

As of late, I have really been enjoying capturing a smattering of dark and dusty targets. NGC 1333 is no exception. I aimed the RASA at this incredible target for 2 full nights near the new moon.  The FOV provides good detail of NGC 1333 with it's reflection and dark nebula, but I also find the area of Barnard 1 on the left hand side of the frame to be quite incredible. The area in the top right reflection nebula around the bright star and detail B 203 in the bottom right add to the character of the composition.

The project involved my first experience with pixisight's Spectrophotometric color calibration as I was unable to get my system to correctly run photometric color calibration. After downloading the files, the process was straight forward and much faster than PCC. I used HDR  multiscale on the bright portion to of NGC 1333 to bring out some more detail. I may have taken it a touch to far and will likely go back and bleed a less aggressive version into the final.  At the tail end of the edit, I completed additional sharpening of the starless image in PS using the high-pass filter method that I found brought out some of the dust details better than my sharpening in PI.

I personally and professionally feel that the embryo nebula naming to be slightly incorrect as this appears to be a fetus at approximately 5 week gestational age just at the point where I/we can see a fetal heart beat via ultrasound.

All that aside, this DSO is quite incredible. It's a stellar nursey approximately 1000 light years from Earth in the constellation of Perseus within the larger molecular cloud. Per wikipedia, the area contains about 450 solar masses of material with 150 stars identified in the cluster. A significant minority of these young stars have yet to reach the main sequence in their stellar evolution with the median star age of the cluster estimated to be approximately 1 million years.
