Description

I have been fascinated by the Dragons of Ara and how they "fit into" the Milky Way. They are such a remarkable structure, and appear almost "out of context" with the Milky Way in this region.

So here is an SHO image at 200mm taken over 3nights, with 15hours total exposure.

At this scale, I find it interesting to see how the Dragons are dwarfed by the dark lanes of the Milky Way and even the shells around NGC6164/65, which almost becomes the star of the show.  RCW105 also comes into view,  looking a bit like a Happy Pig Face to me.    There are a couple of other Ha emission regions in the Milky Way to the far left of the image which are quite interesting,  but unnamed - at least in my atlas.

Finally, the constellation boundaries on this image show just how close they came to being "The Dragons of Norma".

I hope you find this illuminating, and welcome and comments and critique as I am still learning how to use (and post-process) these wide field images.

60 x 300sec in each of Halpha, [OIII] and [SII] filters.
