Description

Southern Cross constellation is a distinctive feature in our southern night sky. Usually shown as four or five stars, in reality made up of thousands of stars. As early navigators of New Zealand, the Māori believed it was an anchor of a great sky canoe, or an opening in the sky that the winds blew through, and early European voyagers saw it as a cross. 4 stars appear on the NZ Flag and 5 stars are on the Australian Flag.

It is very bright and distintive in dark skies as it moves from the east to the west during the night.
