Description

Messier 81 a spiral galaxy, was first discovered by Johann Elert Bode in December 1774. It is located in the constellation Ursa Major, and lays approximately 11.8 million light-years from Earth.

Its neighbor, Messier 82 an edge-on star burst galaxy, was also discovered by Bode. It too resides in Ursa Major and is estimated to lay 11.4 – 12.4 million light years from us.
