IC1318 is an emission nebula 4900 light years away in the Sadr region of the constellation Cygnus, The Swan, also commonly called the Northern Cross. IC1318 is located next to the center star of the Northern Cross known as Sadr (outside of this field of view). This nebula is commonly known as the Butterfly Nebula. It is partially obscured and divided by a 20 light year thick dark nebula, LDN889, giving the region its distinctive butterfly appearance.
