Here is my crack at M27 the Dumbbell Nebula. We have had some poor weather these last 8 weeks and so I am happy to have been able to get what I could done in the field with this one. I think another couple of nights of Ha and Oiii integrations would have helped bring out some of the faint "wings" of this iconic subject. But not to be.

I can tell you with brutal honesty that this project made me feel like a dumbbell. Very difficult to process but I sure did learn a whole lot doing this.

The nebula seems to be quite a bright object and perhaps I should have used the 294mm to capture this one with it's additional stop of DR. In any case, if I have 20+ hours of integration in this, I have to have 60+ hours trying to pull what I thought I could get out of the data.

My goals for this image sort of centered around the idea that this object is in fact a spheroid and I was hoping to try to draw a little depth out of this to maybe show that spheroidal quality together with some detail within the PN. I also wanted to keep the color fairly natural. Perhaps some modest success on both of those fronts.

I did just a small amount of star reduction using morphological transformation but only 1 iteration of that. I was thinking that in this case, stars are a prominent feature of this field and to de-emphasize them too much is not what I wanted to do.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
