Description

M16, also known as Eagle Nebula, is a vast H-II region in the constellation of the Serpent's Tail.

Known since the 18th century, the nebula is also clearly visible from binoculars: several times, under a dark sky, I happened to see it, glimpsing a diffuse nebulosity in the center of a cluster.

Matter of fact, part of M16 is an open cluster of young stars having an emission nebula associated, mainly of ionized hydrogen.

Probably the most fascinating thing about this region is the presence of star formation phenomena, including the PILLARS OF CREATION: gigantic columns of dense gas in which singular phenomena of star formation occur.
