Description

This image captures a pair of galaxies located in the constellation of Virgo at a declination of +13 degrees. These two galaxies are too far apart to be interacting.

NGC 4639 is the galaxy at upper right. It is a magnitude 12.7 barred spiral galaxy located 80 million light years away. It spans 2.6 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 65,000 light years. Ansae are visible at the end of each bar.

NGC 4654 is the galaxy at lower left. It is a magnitude 10.5 spiral galaxy located 45 million light years away. It spans 2.4 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 70,000 light years. The galaxy structure appears to contain straight segmented Vorontsov-Velyaminov row sections. Numerous star clusters and HII regions are visible in the disk.
