Description

This planetary nebula is located in the constellation of Vulpecula at a declination of +24 degrees.  It is large for a PN, falling into the ancient PN category which means it is both large and faint.  It is so faint that it does not show up at all on the RGB image.

Determining the distance of a PN is difficult, so as expected the distance estimates are all over the map.  I am using 2200 light years as a median estimate from the sources I have examined.

This magnitude 16 PN spans 9 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 6 light years.  The progenitor star appears as the faint blue star at the center of the nebula, just above and left of the brightest white star.  Like many PN, the outer rim is stronger in HII while the inner section is stronger in OIII. Given the size of this PN, it is surprising that the interstellar medium (ISM) has not had more of an influence on its still nearly round shape.
