Description

These two Astrobin Debut Objects are located in the constellation of Pisces at a declination of -1 degree.  These 2 face-on grand design spiral galaxies are small but interesting, yet not much is written about them.  Although they both appear disturbed and are close to each other in distance,  the data shows that they are too far apart to be causing disturbance in each other.

IC 1515 (the bottom galaxy) is lying behind 2 Milky Way stars (blue and orange) from our view perspective.  This galaxy is a magnitude 14 Seyfert barred spiral galaxy.  It is located 295 million light years away and spans 1 arc-minute in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 85,000 light years.  Bright ansae are visible at each end of the bar.  The right side of the disk looks undisturbed but the left side has an extra “arm flume” that could be the result of gravitational disturbance, but I don’t see a companion anywhere.

IC 1516 (the top galaxy) is a magnitude 13 galaxy located 320 million light years away.  It spans 1.1 arc-minutes and has a diameter of 105,000 light years, although the faint star streams extend out further than that.  The galaxy disk is well disturbed.  Several possible companion candidates are seen throughout the disk.

At the top left of the image is a third, albeit small and faint, grand design spiral.
