Description

The Pencil Nebula, NGC2736 is a small part of the Vela Supernova remnant situated approx 815 light years away. The nebula's luminous appearance comes from dense gas regions that have been struck by the supernova shock wave that is traveling at about 500, 000 km/hr. As the shock wave travels through space, it rams into interstellar material creating the rippled appearance.
The Vela supernova remnant is was created from a star that exploded some 11,000 years ago.
I wanted to capture all the filamentous OIII rich regions adjacent to the Pencil in this HOO image taken with the Esprit 120Ed and the ASI2600mmPro.
