Description

This image captures two small obscure reflection nebulae located in the constellation of Auriga at a declination of +32 degrees.

NGC 1985, also known as Cederblad 57, is the reflection nebula at upper left. This object lies 6000 light years away and surrounds a small star cluster. The cluster is only partially visible here but is clearly visible in infrared images. The nebula has an apparent size of 1.5 arc-minutes, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 4 light years. An interesting dust lane pattern is silhouetted by the nebula. As with many of these objects, it was originally classed as a planetary nebula. A reddish HII signal dominates the outer portion of the nebula, making it look more like an emission nebula than a reflection nebula to me.

vdB 45 is the reflection nebula at lower right, surrounding the star HD 245259. No distance information is available for this object.
