Description

NGC 1499/LBN 756  is a large, faint emission nebula in Perseus shaped similar to the outline of California. It lies about 1000 light years away in the Orion arm of the Milky Way. It is a cloud of galactic gas left from star formation and illuminated by the bright blue-white star Xi Perseus aka Menkib to its south (top of this image). The nebula is about 100 light years in extent.
