Description

For your viewing pleasure, I present to you the Veil, concealed in its own veil of hydrogen alpha.

I have been trying to shoot the Veil for as long as I have been doing astrophotography. Smoke and clouds have made it an impossibility up until now. The idea was to shoot a gargantuan 4-panel mosaic with the RASA8 totaling around 50 hours this summer. Instead I have had to settle for a wide field shot with my 135mm. Speaking of which, this is the first light for the 135mm! I wanted F/2 in Montreal and I wouldn't settle for anything less in bortle 9. The 135mm was the only real option as I soured on hauling a C6 + Hyperstar on the plane with me and lugging it around.

A LOT of testing went into the 135mm. The one I have now is the third one after sending the first two back. I guess QA ain't what it used to be. The next problem was sorting out the tilt and backfocus. Even after getting that sorted out, the stars are still sub-par at F/2. Thus, the stars are taken at f/4 and then added to the image at the end.

By the time I started shooting the Veil in Montreal I just wanted to get it over and done with. I was not expecting anything great out of the image. You could imagine my surprise when I stacked it all up and was presented with this marvelous Ha cloud around the Veil! I have seen glimpses of it here and there but never this structured.

The processing was touch and go until I put in the RGB stars and it really did tie the whole image together.  I had so little faith in the lens and the sky conditions that I am still in a bit of a shock in how this all turned out!
