Description

This object, nicknamed the California Nebula, is an emission nebula located 1000 light years away in the constellation of Perseus at a declination of 36 degrees. The nebula is 100 light years long. I am surprised that this bright popular nebula is not listed in either the Messier or Caldwell catalogs, or the followup Hidden Treasures and Secret Deep catalogs by O'Meara. I believe this is because it is so hard to see visually.

This is my first true 3 channel narrowband image of this object.  Like the IC405 image I recently posted, 3 channel narrowband is tough here because the OIII signal is so faint.  But in the end I am glad I included OIII since it brings out the bright dust fronts more, plus it adds a blue color to the bottom third of the nebula.
