Description

NGC 2244 is an open cluster in the Rosette Nebula.   It lives 5K light-years away in Monoceros.   It has a diameter of  ~130 light-years.  This look focuses in on the cluster itself, and the Bok gobules that are around in the field (the dark blobs where dust and gas is likely condensing and which may hold proplyds and/or nascent star formation).   The Rosette nebula is about 1/2 again wider than this view.

In this less red view (as compared to many Ha renditions of the object), I've avoided adjusting the OSC output too much.   At first, given the overlapping spectral response of the sensor's RGB channels, the temptation is to push redward to "conform" to other's views.   However, after reviewing the OIII and SII content in the nebula, it's obvious that there is some green and other hues in the center region.   An excellent AURA / NSF image (see https://lweb.cfa.harvard.edu/~atripath/Module/Rosette_Multistars.html) shows this.   After seeing that rendition, I realized the OSC rendition isn't as color confused as I thought.  So, I've left it with only light adjustment of saturation and color balance.
