Arp 38

This Arp object, also known as NGC 6412, is a face-on spiral galaxy located 75 million light years away in the constellation of Draco at a declination of +76 degrees. This galaxy spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 45,000 light years.

I love Arp objects. This one is classified in the category of “Spiral galaxies with low surface brightness companions”. Yes, those are pretty special, and as I imaged this object I was excited about seeing the details of the companion. But after processing it, I could not see a companion. Sure enough, after doing some research, I learned that there is no companion here. There is an interesting bright knot in the upper disk which I assume the esteemed Dr. Arp mistakenly identified as a companion.

Not all is lost, though. I enjoyed that the galaxy appears to be in the shape of a pentagon. I also liked seeing all of the distant galaxies in the background.
