Description

When galaxies gravitationally interact with each other, clouds of gas and dust are compressed, creating great areas where these ingredients come together to potentially form new stellar systems. Such is the case here. M-82 and 81 are bound to each other by gravity, and being the lesser system makes 82 more prone to the disturbances caused by 81's passing effect, evident in the red hydrogen regions visible on either side of the core.
