The largest of the nebulae in this image is NGC 346—almost obscured by the abundance of stars in this region, a star-region in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). NGC 346 is a very active star-formation region, and the Hubble scientists have even observed pre-ignition star masses. The over-all abundance of very young stars exceeds 2500 in NGC 346 alone. The other active areas in this image, indicated by star clusters, HI emissions, and bubbles of gas, also are active star-birth regions. The stars that form in the SMC have minimal abundances of heavier elements (He and above), indicative of stars that form from gases that have not been incorporated in stars previously.

A comment about processing this image: I extracted the HI line-only component using the Red and HI images. The HI-line image was blended with the L channel extracted from the RGB image. This new Luminosity channel replaced that in the RGB images. This accomplished a couple of objectives: it subdued the star (which irritatingly obscure much of the cloud structure) and it enhanced the detailed structures in the clouds.
