Description

M35 and NGC 2158 are contrasting open star clusters in Gemini.  M35 is relatively nearby at 2800 light years distant and relatively young at 150 million years old.  It is diffuse with about 2500 stars spread out over 30 light years across - the bright blue stars are representative of a younger star cluster.  NGC 2158 is about four times more distant at around 9000 light years and over 10 times older at about 2 billion years old while also being much more compact.  Once thought to be a globular cluster, it is now known to be an intermediate-age, metal-poor open cluster that is a member of the old thin disk population (generally, the most prominent part of the Milky Way that is visible to our eyes).
