Description

The California Nebula is a large emission nebula that is around 1,000 light years away in the constellation of Perseus. The nebula has an elongated shape that resembles that of California, hence the nomenclature.

The gasses in the nebula are excited by the star Xi Persei (Menkib).

The nebula occupies around 2.5° of the night sky. We photographed a small section of the nebula (around 0.7° x 0.56°) between 22 November 2020 and 19 January 2021.
