IC 1396 - The Elephant Trunk

This one was five weeks in the making. Weather in Dallas has been uncooperative. But I'm glad to get it done. The tall portrait framing may seem odd, but this frame is part of a 4-panel mosaic that will include the Flying Bat & Squid. I'm pretty sure it will take all summer to get that done.

This was shot using three different mounts. I normally use the 10u with my EdgeHD 1100. But I managed to dump that rig over and bent the OTA. Fortunately, no glass was broken and Celestron, which has the best customer service in the business, was able to put the optics in a new tube very inexpensively. So while it was off for repair, I mounted the WO Z61 on the 10u and took several nights of unguided subs for this project. Once the 1100 came back, I moved the Z61 to my old CGX-L mount to see how it would work. It worked great for two nights, then the CGX-L just died on me. It would make lots of noise, but it wouldn't slew or track. So it's headed off for repair now. I got lucky, the warranty expires tomorrow! So I put the Z61 back on its normal mount, the little iOptron CEM15-EC and finished up this project. If you've read this far, thanks for indulging me.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
