Description

The Elephant Trunk itself is the long finger of nebula at about the 10 o'clock position; IC 1396 refers to the rest of the nebulous region.
This is a large emission nebula in the constellation Cepheus, and is located about 2,400 lightyears away. The red glow here is from mostly hydrogen, and some sulfur, gas. High-energy stellar winds from the stars within energize the gas, causing it to glow red. There is also oxygen gas here, but the red hydrogen glow dominates. Many other elements present from long-dead stars don't glow in visible light.

The Elephant Trunk itself is a massive structure of gas and dust -- it's an astounding 20 lightyears long! The rim of the round area at the rim is lit by a single massive star, HD 206267, which is the bright star to the right of the trunk, closer to the center of the nebula. In fact, that star is largely responsible for illuminating the entire nebula,

I took this image on a trip to Calhoun County Park in West Virginia back in August, which has recently built a really nice observing field with several power stations and a nice wood cabin.
