Description

One of the wonders of the southern sky, and the envy of everyone in the Northern Hemisphere, where it remains below the horizon all year -  The Carina Nebula is a widely studied and photographed region of space containing rich star forming regions, vast pillars and plumes of hydrogen and delicate waves of oxygen. At its center is Eta Carinae, a variable star-system which is likely to explode into a supernova in the ‘near future’ (sometime in the next million years).

As an amateur astronomer/astrophotographer I often look for something different, or perhaps a unique perspective that I can share. That's not easy to do with something so widely photographed and studied as The Carina Nebula, and so it's remained off my list for a while - I simply didn't think I'd have anything 'new' to offer.

But what started as a late-season challenge by another photog over in the UK quickly became a labour of love - and a race against a setting nebula and the onset of winter weather - and right from that first glorious Ha sub, it was immediately apparent why The Carina Nebula is so highly regarded. Yes, everyone LOOOOOVES Carina! And now, I guess I do too!
