Description

This object is a dark nebula located in the constellation of Cygnus at a declination of +40 degrees. Barnard 343 belongs to the Gamma Cygni Complex of clouds about 2,000 light-years away. Barnard is the main dark nebula at the center of the image and is about 10 arc-minutes long, which at that distance corresponds to an actual length of almost 10 light years.

I like the combination of the many dark nebulae, the colorful star field, the reddish emission regions, and particularly the interesting thin curving structures which subtly wind their way through the background. I am not exactly sure what these are. My best guess is that they are remnants of the cloud which have been shaped and eroded into pillar-like formations by the light from nearby stars, akin to the Pillars of Creation, but unlike that formation, the orientation of these structures is not aligned in any specific direction.
