Description

A beautiful spiral galaxy some 38 million light years away in the constellation of Coma Berenices, the Needle Galaxy displays prominently the origins of its nickname: the edge-on perspective. This giant galaxy is slightly more luminous than our close neighbor M31 in Andromeda.

One magnificent feature of this galaxy is the large, rounded bulge at its core. Due to perspective, we do not yet have a complete understanding of the nature of the galactic core, though observations from Spitzer confirms a central bar structure with a pseudobulge and a central ring. It would be lovely to tilt our view for a better look at the rich core structures.

The neighborhood of this galaxy is quite rich as well. It is one of the more prominent members of the Coma I Group of galaxies. Its immediate area contains 240 globular clusters, as well as two companion galaxies. One of which is displayed in the lower right. The other appears as a small, faint smudge above and slightly right of the core of 4565.

This image, like many others I have completed through HDR compositing, has a rather weak background structure. Pulling the background darker to bring out the galaxy more in this image seems to have helped, but I am still in the works of a more permanent solution. If anyone has suggestions, I'm always open...

Wishing lots of CS, especially to Gary Lopez in Monterey...
