Description

Wide Heart and SoulWidefield Heart (IC1805) and Soul (IC1871), Sep 2022
Williams Optics Redcat APO 51; - ASI2600MC;
Celestron CGEM II; IDAS NBZ Nebular Booster Filter;
152 x 600s exposures, Bin 1, Gain 100;
Total Integration Time = 25.3 hours;

Both the Heart and Soul Nebulae are examples of H2 star forming regions expanding away from clusters of newly formed stars from which they were originally sourced. Radiation from the stars causes the hydrogen and other material to emit in the visible spectrum, dominated by the strong, red, hydrogen alpha wavelength. The nebulae are 6000 ly away and the image spans approximately 300 ly across.
It was very gratifying to capture both of these nebula in a single frame - the benefit of a short focal length, wide field set-up. This image benefitted from a long total integration or exposure time of over 25 hours, as it was the focus of quite a few nights of early imaging before my telescope could turn to Orion. Total integration time really makes a difference to the resultant data quality, SNR and ease of processing.
One more image, a weeks holiday, and my widefield stint will be over... for now.
