Description

I imaged the Milky Way from the amazingly dark skies on the Hawaiian islands of Kauai and the Big Island at the end of July and beginning of August.

This is the seventh in a series of images from the Big Island where we stayed along the Kohala Coast on the northwestern part of the island looking out over the Pacific Ocean. This is a closer view of the Milky Way core region in Sagittarius taken with a 50 mm prime lens, which has an equivalent focal length of ~75 mm on the Nikon D5300 with its APSC sensor. These shots were from a fixed mount, so at this focal length I had to shoot lots of short exposures to prevent star trailing. The Lagoon Nebula (M8) is the bright H-alpha region at the center of the image. Above and to the right is the Triffid Nebula (M20). The two bright H-alpha regions at the top of the image are the Eagle Nebula (M16) and the Omega Nebula (M17).

Imaged using a Nikon D5300 (full spectrum modified), IDAS HEUIB-II (H-α Enhanced UV IR Blocking) filter, and 14 mm Rokinon lens at F1.8. Exposures were 5 seconds at ISO-6400.

Pre-processed using PixInsight Batch Pre-Processing (BPP) script. Images calibrated using darks, bias, and flats. Stacked 46 subs for a total integration time of ~4 minutes. Post-processed in Pixinsight: Cropped, gradient removal with ABE, MLT for noise reduction, Background Neutralization, Color Calibration, SCNR, stretched using Histogram Transformation Tool, Curves Transformation, HDR transform, Local histogram transform, and Color Saturation boost.
