Description

Taken at native f10 (2000mm) in my 8" SCT, using a narrow band filter, my south-up image shows the Northern highlands, a ring of spectacular mountain ranges surrounding mare imbrium. Starting in the top left (NW) are Montes Appenninus, a 600km range with peaks reaching up 5km, and the site of the Apollo 15 landing in Rima Hadley. Mons Hadley is due west of the large 82km wide crater Archimedes. Below the lunar 'Appenines' lie the Caucasus and Montes Alpes at the bottom of my image, with the fascinating Vallis Alpes - a 10km wide, 166km long valley splitting the lunar Alps. The brooding dark crater at the bottom of my image is the giant Plato, 100km wide, and 1.5km deep, which has been the site of spurious 'transient lunar phenomena'. To the right the Montes Jura, catching the light on the day 10 terminator, and sheltering Sinus Iridium, the ‘bay of rainbows’ - such a lovely name for this basaltic lava flow.
