Description

NGC 6503 is a 10th magnitude flocculent SA(s)cd spiral in the constellation Draco, which is sometimes called the “lost in space” galaxy, perhaps because there are not many other bright galaxies nearby.  While it measures over 7 arcminutes in length including the faintest extents of its spiral arms, the brighter core region is more like 3 arcminutes in length.  I knew it was going to be a difficult target after looking at my first hour of luminance, and it did not disappoint.  Its surface brightness is low, its edges are diffuse, and the resolvable details are quite small.

This image is an (L)RGB composite, with most of the data taken from my Bortle 4+ backyard.  The luminance channel is partially synthetic, consisting of three hours of true luminance from home, one hour from a Bortle 2 dark site, and all of the RGB frames median combined.  I needed a lot of subs to reduce the sky background noise, so I threw it all in there and pressed “stack.”  All stacks were drizzled 2x to achieve the image scale of 0.7” per pixel.

It's hard to believe, but I started this project on April 10th.  The last subs were collected on June 26th.  There was a six-week period in May-June where the moon and persistently bad weather limited me to very short sessions in between clouds.  Hopefully, the rest of the summer will be more cooperative.

Title: Stronger noise reduction

Description: This image needed more aggressive noise reduction, so I re-worked it by blending Topaz AI noise reduction into the original. Looking back on this project, it seems to have higher noise levels than any of my galaxy images from 2022, which I blame on warmer weather that forced me to raise the sensor temperature. The northerly declination of the target also kept it low in the sky, which did not help the signal:noise ratio.
