Description

This pair of rarely imaged objects is located in the constellation of Cygnus at a declination of +55 degrees. They are rarely imaged because they are subtle, so subtle that you may not notice that they are there until closer inspection.

vdB 144 is the small reflection nebula at upper left, surrounding the 6th magnitude orange giant star HD 206509. This nebula is 700 light years away and spans 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual width of about 0.75 light year. It is fascinating to me that the nebula has a slight bluish tint but the star does not look blue at all. This star looks to be a double star but I could not confirm that.

NGC 7127 is the open star cluster of about 20 stars located 4700 light years away. It is seen at the lower right of the image, below the 7th magnitude orange star HD 206823. The cluster spans 5 arc-minutes, which corresponds to a true width of 7 light years.

The left side of the image looks to have a significant dust presence due to the number of obscured background stars.
