Description

Another dark-sky weekend acquisition -- galaxy NGC 3718! This "peculiar" galaxy is weirdly-shaped enough to be included in the Arp catalog of peculiar galaxies as well. It lies about 52 million lightyears away in the constellation Ursa Major. The smaller galaxy to the left is NGC 3729, which is also physically near to NGC 3718, only about 150,000 lightyears away. This is close enough that the two interact gravitationally, which likely contributes to the larger galaxy's odd structure. Below the main galaxy is a cluster of more distant galaxies that are about 400 million lightyears away. If you look closely, you can also spot quite a few other galaxies.
