Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a barred distorted grand spiral galaxy located 140 million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major at a declination of +59 degrees.  It spans 2.3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 100,000 light years.

Despite its great distance away, the galaxy disk presents interesting detail.  Particularly interesting is the blue star-like object which appears to be embedded in the bar.  Several studies have confirmed that this is a small dwarf companion galaxy and not just a nearby superimposed Milky Way star.

A third arm appears to be extending upwards from the disk, likely caused by the disturbance of the companion.
