Description

This object is an edge-on lenticular galaxy located 30 million light years away in the constellation of Canes Venatici at a declination of +43 degrees. This 10.7 magnitude galaxy has a surface brightness of 12.1. It spans 4 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of 40,000 light years.

Since this galaxy is only 3 degrees from edge-on, it gives us a great view of its peanut shaped core. The coloring of the galaxy is subtle but as expected, with the core yellow and the disk blue.

NGC 4111 shares the sky in this image with several smaller but pretty background galaxies.
