Description

NGC 7293, the Helix Nebula, is an example of a planetary nebula. It is formed by an intermediate to low-mass star that is too small to create a supernova. The star sheds its outer layers near the end of its evolution and becomes a white dwarf star. The observed glow of the central star is so energetic that it causes the previously expelled gases to glow brightly. The nebula is 655 light years distant, 11000 years old and expanding at 33 kilometers per second.
