When I was 13 my parents bought me a 50mm refractor on a table top tripod. I would take it outside at night, prop it on a huge boulder in the back yard and search for things. I got my first views of Jupiter, Saturn, and the moon through a telescope.
For many years I didn’t do anything with astronomy because I couldn’t afford it. I was busy with teaching, coaching, and other hobbies. About 20 years ago a fellow teacher sold my his C11 mounted on an old sand cast wedge mount for 200 dollars. He told me something was wrong with the telescope and he didn’t want to try to troubleshoot it. It turned out there was nothing wrong with the scope that a good collimation couldn’t fix. I enjoyed that scope for 10 years before a got another C11. It was the Edge HD model. These days, since I have some disposable income, I have more astronomy equipment than I ever thought I would ever have. It has gotten a little bit out of hand so I have been selling off or giving away some of my old stuff I don’t use anymore.
These days I do mostly astrophotography, but I still enjoy going to star parties and looking though an eyepiece. My local club does mostly public events so I get to show our part of the universe to a lot of people. It is a lot of fun to be around fellow nerds.
