I started with astrophotography before digital camera's were common. Following a guide star by eye, with an old C8 on an eq5... I was able to capture nothing more than a faint Orion nebula and some very small Jupiter and Saturn pictures. I told my wife that I may never sell my old C8, because some day will come that I will continue the hobby! That moment came with Comet Neowise and I started with a Canon DSLR I already had and bought a small refractor. Within a year I had ordered way more to the point of no return... I'm hooked again! With every new picture I learn so much more. Thanks to the internet these days there is so much information, even too much sometimes. I'm trying to find my way in acquiring and editing my pictures. What works for someone will not always work for you. I'm a composer and record my own music. If I compare that to astrophotography, I'm thinking to go the 'mono' route soon. In music I like to record al instruments as clean as possible on separate tracks and then mix them together. Of course it's not exactly the same, but I think I could get better results with a mono camera... So that might be the next step ;-) (UPDATE: I got that mono camera!)
