Description

The three stars near the top are the belt stars of Orion the hunter, from left to right, in a slanted straight line:  Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka.  Mintaka is a multiple star system, with one of its companions visible as a pale blue dot 52 arc-seconds from the primary star, when viewed in a small telescope.

In this image are several popular nebulae:  The flame (NGC 2024, SH2-277), The horsehead (Barnard 33), The running man (SH2-279) and of course the Orion nebula, (M42).

Faintly surrounding the region are swaths of interstellar gas and dust, which is just a very small portion of the much larger Barnard's Loop, outside the field of view of this image.
