Description

First of all I'm surprised that this Nebula does not have an informal name. It has an unusual trunk formation and seems to be a popular AP target. It looks to me more like an elephant's trunk than IC1396.

This image is a milestone of firsts for me. It is my first auto guided image using PHD2 and my first successful attempt at plate solving. No more star alignments. I also added a ZWO EAF to my telescope train to assist with the focus.

Last night I discovered the culprit of the light artifacts that were showing up in my images. It was coming from a light leak in my manual filter wheel at the turn knob so I used a dark colored dish towel to cover up the hole and that seems to have temporarily solved that problem. A sealed EFW will soon replace the manual one for a permanent fix.

Also known as Sh2-86 in the Sharpless Catalogue.

Thanks for looking and CS!
Eddie

UPDATE 2/9/23:  I reprocessed this image that I posted a couple of years ago using BlurXT, NoiseXT and Topaz Sharpen AI with wonderful results.
