Description

Capture Notes:

Just got around to processing this image with newer tools and techniques. I imaged it from my now closed remote observatory in New Mexico. I also imaged a series of Mosaics in the much faster Bin4x4 mode. I'm going to rework those too. (Bored with bad skies....)

I was looking at the Fits header and it reminded me that Comet LoveJoy was one of the few Comets I've shot high in the night sky that was this bright. This image was taken on the evening of the 7th at 9:23pm local time during it's closet approach to earth.

FITS HEADER INFO:

OBJCTALT = ' 53.2100'

OBJCTAZ = '155.7681'

OBJCTHA = ' -0.9493'

Fortunately, my scope was able to peer down to about 7 degrees in altitude just above the south west corner wall of the observatory which allowed the capture of several morning comets too.

C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy)

A long-period comet discovered on 17 August 2014 by Terry Lovejoy.

In January 2015, it brightened to roughly magnitude 4,[10] and became one of the brightest comets located high in a dark sky since comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) in 1997. On 7 January 2015, the comet passed 0.469 AU (70,200,000 km; 43,600,000 mi) from Earth. (Wiki)
