Description

This is another distant  galaxy classified by Arp and Madore in the Catalogue of Southern Peculiar Galaxies. According to the catalogue, this galaxy is placed in category 1a, which comprises galaxies with interacting companions. According to Arp and Madore (1987) galaxies in this category "all appear to deviate significantly from equilibrium forms. For each there is a smaller galaxy close by, which either appears to be causing the perturbation, or is itself distorted. By implication the two disturbances are connected". This galaxy has well defined arms which are the product of this interaction, giving it the appearance of a condor, hence its name. It is 212 million light years away and considered one of the largest spiral galaxies because of the two elongated arms which extend out some 520,000 light years.
